Created by a volcanic lava flow thousands of years ago and shaped by the erosion of ocean and wind, a rugged cliff stands out as a natural dividing point between the beaches of El Tunco y Sunzal. Some years back the Alvarez brothers, Diego and Alfonso, has the idea of opening a gourmet restaurant atop this cliff, an innovative idea that combined fine dining with ocean spray and panoramic views of one of the country’s finest surf beaches. It turned out be a hit, and today patrons keep flocking to the refreshing and stylish restaurant Café Sunzal to enjoy great food and watch the surfers cruising on the waves below.

This month the Café Sunzal team has something brand new on the menu: They are opening the doors to an exclusive beach house named Casa de Mar. These suite-style apartments are caved into the rock landscape just beneath Café Sunzal, and each has its own design and private wooden balcony. A picturesque staircase swirls down through a charming garden setting that surrounds eight luxurious apartments at ground level in front of the beach. There is also a beautiful pool, surrounded by a wooden deck, with plenty of lazy chairs for relaxing while you enjoy the views and beautiful scenery of Casa de Mar.

The moment you enter this oasis, you observe the beauty and detail that went into each aspect of the design; from any angle you’ll find an original and stylish setting. Elaborate ocean motifs made of pebbles adorn the cobblestone pavement throughout the property; the apartment wall, furniture and accessories are all in lovely earthen hues; the paths and balconies are shaped as to fit directly into the rocky landscape, and the adorning tropical flowers and palm trees make this a truly exceptional place.

Each apartment is equipped with deluxe beds and bathrooms, as well as a small living room; one eve has a Jacuzzi with a small adjacent garden. Next to the pool is the palm-thatched rancho where you can enjoy a light menu of seafood cocktails and an international bar. If you feel like going for a swim, surfing or strolling on the beach, just walk out the beachfront doorway and in a couple of steps, you’re right on the beach.
